Student Opportunities

High School Student Conference-The High School Student Congress brings together 50 students from across Kentucky and the nation to learn about and develop solutions to current complex political issues.  Students engage with peers from diverse backgrounds and are challenged to listen to those who have different beliefs than their own, to identify common ground and shared goals, to collaborate on areas of mutual benefit, to build relationships based on personal interactions and to learn the art of cooperation from partisan positions.  It will be held June 10-15, 2019 in Lexington, Kentucky and the cost is free.  This program is available to current juniors.  The applications are due on February 1, 2019.  Interested students can visit High School Student Congress to learn more or to download an application.  

UK Student Athletic Trainer Application Form-The UK Athletic Training Department is looking for qualified high school seniors who are interested in working as a student athletic trainer.  Their goal is to bring in students who have an interest in a career in the medical field and explose them to the profession of athletic training and sports medicine.  Scholarships are available after a student completes one year in the program and are based on a student's performance in the athletic training room and in the classroom.  They are looking for seniors who have a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA and may be interested in becoming a student athletic trainer at UK.  Interested and qualified seniors should complete the attached applicaton UK Student Athletic Trainer Application Form and mail to the following address by February 9, 2019:  Joe Craft Football Training Center, 295 Alumini Drive Room 110, Lexington, Kentucky 40506-0280.  They will then select students to come in for a formal interview with the full time staff in the spring.

Boyd County Farm Bureau Distracted Driving Essay Contest-Boyd County Farm Bureau, in conjunction with their commitment to safe driving, is inviting juniors that attend schools in Boyd County to write an essay discussing the dangers of distracted driving and what they can do to become safer drivers.  Each school will have a winner and runner-up who will receive $500 and $250 respectively.  The winner from each school will then be qualified to win $1,500 as the overall Boyd County winner and the county-wide runner up will win $750.  For more info and requirements, go here Boyd County Farm Bureau Distracted Driving Essay Contest.  Deadline to submit the essay is April 1, 2019.

Fund for Gifted Musicians Award-This scholarship was established to help a musically gifted Boyd or Greenup County student in 8th - 12th grade pursue special study opportunities to further develop his or her skills beyond regular, private, school-based study.  The student applicant should demonstrate both a love of music and musical ability, whether through private or school-based study.  The student should also express a desire to study music on a higher level, such as a summer music camp or a university-based master class.  The award is contingent upon proof of acceptance into a qualifying program.  The application can be downloaded here: Fund for Gifted Musicians Award.  Deadline to apply is April 30, 2019.

St Mary's Health Professions Academy-Tenth and eleventh grade students in the tri-state area who are interested in a health care career will be considered for the St Mary's Health Professions Academy.  This academy will be held on June 4th and 5th at the St Mary's Center for Education in Huntington, WV.  Applicants must have at least a 2.5 or greater current cumulative GPA and must currently be a 10th or 11th grade high school student.  The application can be downloaded here:  St Mary's Health Professions Academy The deadline to apply is May 1, 2019.
